Utah is more forgiving on time than most states, but not on paperwork. You have 180 days to report the injury and up to six years to ask for a hearing. The catch is proof: by year 12 you must be able to show what you are owed.
Utah also pays a little extra for family. Your weekly check can rise by $20 for a dependent spouse and $20 for each child under 18, up to four children, within the weekly cap.

Utah time limits, from the first report to an appeal
- Tell your employer right away. If you wait more than 180 days, you may be disqualified.
- File an Application for Hearing with the Adjudication Division within six years of the accident.
- Disagree with the judge? File a motion for review within 30 days of the decision.
Utah does not treat a long timeline as an excuse to wait. Medical records fade and witnesses move.
What the weekly check looks like in Utah
Temporary total checks are two-thirds of your average weekly wage. For injuries from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027, the maximum is $1,376 a week, which equals the state average weekly wage. The base minimum is $45 a week before family add-ons.
Those checks stop after 312 weeks and cannot run past 12 years from the injury. The first three days go unpaid unless you are off more than 14 days.
One Utah rule surprises people: checks can be cut by 15% if you willfully skipped safety devices or broke safety rules. Our workers comp pay calculator shows a ballpark number.
| Weekly check | two-thirds (66 2/3%) of your average weekly wage |
|---|---|
| Weekly cap, injuries from July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027 | $1,376 |
| Weekly minimum before dependent add-ons | $45 |
| Waiting period | first 3 days unpaid unless you are off more than 14 days |
| How long temporary checks can last | up to 312 weeks within 12 years of the injury |
If your Utah claim is denied
The insurer must send you a denial notice on Form 089 with a general reason. From there, you have the right to file an Application for Hearing with the Adjudication Division of the Labor Commission.
An administrative law judge then holds a hearing and issues a written decision. If your checks stopped instead, see our page on workers comp payments that stopped.
Do I need a workers comp lawyer in Utah?
You can file alone, but denied medical bills are where help pays off. If the carrier flatly denied a medical claim, you hired an attorney and the carrier later had to pay, the Commission can order an add-on fee. It is the lesser of 25% of the medical expenses or $25,000, paid by the carrier.
That add-on comes on top of the fee you agreed to with your attorney and it applies when any wage award in the case is under $5,000. More on how workers comp attorneys get paid.
